Global Awareness
Au Pairs are proud to share their cultures with Americans! They enjoy introducing
young children to the traditions, the sights, and the daily activities of people in their home country. Global Awareness Au
Pairs have reported that it is an honor to be able to represent their countries in front of elementary school students who
are eager to learn more from a person who has recently moved to the United States.
Now, Global Awareness
is reaching out to other locations. Many au pairs have participated in Global Awareness culture fairs and story hours.
What is a culture
fair? A culture fair is a gathering of cultural icons that tell about the customs, culture and geography of that land. A culture fair is held in a large location such as an assembly hall or gymnasium where
tables are set up representing all the participating countries. The room is transformed into a multi cultural learning center
as it is filled with flags, displays and food from many countries. Each county
has a table and au pairs contribute artifacts, pictures, books, food, native costume, toys, currency, and anything else that
represents their countries. Guests are invited to walk around the room to view the contents of each table. They mingle with the au pairs who talk about their display, encouraging the visitors to learn more about
that country. The children are given Travel Journals and country flag stickers
and can visit each country table and answer questions in their journals. Some
Au Pairs demonstrate traditional dances and craft making from their countries. The
children love to watch and sometimes to join in!
What is story hour? Libraries and book stores have story time for
young children. A librarian reads interesting books to young children. Libraries
and bookstores have been happy to have au pairs read stories from their countries or in their language to the young children.
