Interview with an Au Pair

"It was the best experience of my life!  I have learned a lot about myself and how to express my personality"

These are the words of Tiana from Canada.  She spent her year in Connecticut and thoroughly enjoyed her experience.  She tells us how the program changed her life and will stay with her for years to come!

What were your reasons for applying as an au pair? I didn't know what I wanted to do after high school, so I thought this would be a great opportunity to go away for a while and think about my future. I really enjoy taking care of children so I thought this would be a great experience. I also wanted to experience new things, meet new friends and generally have a great time.

Tell us about your host family:  My host family were really nice people. There were 5 of them in total and everyone was very nice and friendly.

Describe the area you live in: I live in Riverside Connecticut. The area is nice and small, their are a lot of places to shop and there is also a beach and many parks to sit and relax in.

What did you study and why did you choose the course? I took two courses at Manhattanville College that was a 15 min drive on the freeway from my house. I enjoyed taking English for International Tourism and American Journalism. Since my first language is English I found them very easy but I enjoyed meeting au pairs from other countries.

Tell us about any travelling you have done or are planning to do: I mostly went to New York during the weekends by train which only took me 45mins, I love New York and will miss being so close to it.

What have you gained during the year? I have gained many friends, and great memories that I will cherish forever.

What has been the best experience so far? Spending time with my friends every weekend and having fun with my host children.

How have you been spending you pocket money? I have bought many clothes from my favourite stores, and I also bought things when I went to New York. I mostly bought what was in style and will start a new trend when I am at home.

If there was one thing that we could have told you about being an au pair to better prepare you for your year, what is it?  Don't pack to many clothes because you will buy alot of things when you are here!
